Introducing SugarBox, Uptown's Newest Dessert and Coffee Bar (Photos)

Friday night marked the grand opening of SugarBox, Dallas' newest dessert and coffee bar. The sweet shop -- located under the Mondrian apartments where Dimples Cupcakes used to live, at 3000 Blackburn Street -- boasts a broad selection of cupcakes, French macarons, cake balls, cakes and dog-friendly pupcakes.

What was once a space colored with hot pink and lime green has been transformed by dark browns and sea-foam blue, creating a more relaxed visual aesthetic, but with plenty of Uptown flare.

"I've had the concept in mind for about three years," says owner Terisa Novick, who signed the lease only a few months ago. And while it's Novick's dream to serve wine alongside sweets, she's sticking to various espresso beverages and teas in the Uptown space for now, since its proximity to North Dallas High School makes the liquor licensing process more expensive. For now, the shop is BYOB. Another SugarBox location is scheduled to open at The Shops at Legacy in Plano in November, though, and this location will serve wine.

Here are some more photos of the space:

Before I start, I’d like to disclose why I am posting on this thread.  I may wind up regretting this, but I feel there are some misconceptions being posted about my wife’s shop.  Particularly because this is a new business, I feel it is important that anyone reading this know the truth. I can confirm that my wife has been talking about this concept for at least three years (feels like a lot longer if you want to know the truth).  It is her concept, her dream, her marketing and her tireless hours of work that have gone into making Sugarbox what it is today.  I’m proud of her, Sugarbox, and the product they are putting out. Do we believe that three weeks after opening that everything will be perfect?  Absolutely not.  I think there’s always room for improvement in a new business and I know she will not quit until she’s made it a huge success.  However, I know it will not be a success without the support of the local community.  Instead of making unsubstantiated claims of it being a corporate concept, I ask you to celebrate what it is, a local, woman owned business that is helping to bring jobs, fun and great desserts into the community.  I realize that everyone has different tastes.  Many of you are used to a different style of cupcake that originates from a box.  Sugarbox makes all its cupcakes and cakeballs from scratch.  Point being, it’s different, it’s an adjustment.  Give it a chance.  If you have a serious sweet tooth (you know who you are) give the cake balls a try.  They just might be what you are looking for.  I had numerous people how much they enjoyed them at the grand opening.  As for the cupcake shop that was there previously, all I can say is that there were many things going on behind the scenes as for how they went out of business.  It’s not appropriate for me to go into further detail. It also appears there were questions into why we’d sign up for shops at legacy as well.  I can only say that this was a strategic decision and one that we do not regret.  We believe in the concept and believe both locations will be a huge success, but not without a lot of hard work and the support of the local communities.  We appreciate your continued support and feedback as we work to make Sugarbox a valued part of the community.  Thank you!Ashur

(I swear I don't want to come off bitchy, just realistic)...Why are they leasing a space at Shops of Legacy before knowing that the first and BRAND NEW location can make it?

CheeryBitch

The ready to go branding, the second leasing at Shops of Legacy, the cutesy "pupcakes", the trendy cake balls...... it's WAY more than just someone's 'concept in mind for about three years'. <snark> A corporate concept maybe. </snark> Call me skeptic! For once, I'd like to see a real, good, old-fashioned bakery. They seem to be a dying breed. Oh, but this is a "dessert bar"..... gotcha (cue eye roll)......

Although I would really like them to succeed, I have my doubts.

I wonder how come? Those macarons look together.  Good lift. Really every thing looks well baked. Is it a competition thing, a location thing, a space thing, or a cake balls are stupid thing?

And they are a little stupid.

Except for weekends and a few evenings, that neighborhood is "dead on arrival". If they can survive that, than they might make it. Dimples couldn't make it and personally, I don't see Sugar Box offering a product so superior as to make the difference to succeed where others failed. And, I think the location sucks!Hope I'm wrong. I wish them well.

I believe the Total Cupcake Market (TCM) is already at saturation point, in the zip codes where the Cupcake Target Audience (CTA) will spend money

And there you have the Dallas way!  9 places to get frou frou cupcakes for $4 each, not one good bakery to get a hoagie roll

I dunno Jon, the demand for kitschy baked goods has proved quite elastic in other major markets. It seems the more we hate them, the more that demand grows. Dark forces are at play.

The cupcakes were amazing and the cakeballs were by far the best I have ever eaten. I love the broad variety of flavors and am very excited to see the new flavors being developed. The atmosphere was relaxing and friendly. All new businesses have a few kinks to work out but I would give Sugar Box an huge thumbs up !

Tried them last Thurs. before their grand opening the next day.  Sadly, I wish they'd done something to change up the space, it's awkward, and has been the same for the past 2 tenants.  It feels almost like a jinx for anyone new, when I want someone to succeed in that space.  But the color scheme and graphics/branding are great.

They were out of Red Velvet cupcakes, the first cupcake by which I judge all "cupcakeries" around town, so I tried the PB/Choc and Strawberry.  Both were dry, with a stiff and dense texture instead of being moist, fluffy, and crumby, and I could taste the shortening in the frosting more so than the flavor.  Something was just off.

I did however grab a 1/2 dozen macarons, and they did a pretty good job with these. A tad on the expensive side, I mean, the cost came out more than what I paid for a 1/2 dozen at La Duree in Paris recently, and La Duree they are not.  But then again, who is?

All in all, I'd go back, if just to try the Red Velvet and see if they redeem themselves.  But I would suggest they think about some booth/banquette seating and WiFi if they want to see a regular hang-out crowd emerge.  The space would feel nice with some activity, like a true coffee shop.  Uptown is not the area to plunk down a "sip coffee and reflect" kinda' joint, it needs to be bustling, feel like a hangout.  If you're gonna' sip wine or coffee and reflect on life, catch some live music, and eat sweets, you'll go to Chocolate Secrets.

I want SugarBox to be more hip, I wanna' see them make it!
