Jason Boso and Twisted Root Win Big for Big D

Each year, Nation's Restaurant News selects five emerging companies as its Hot Concepts! Award winners. This year's group was cited for "bold tactics, outstanding creativity and strong performances in a persistently sluggish economy."

And one of Dallas' own is a member of that group: Twisted Root Burger Co. Other winners included Crave, FöD (Food on Demand) from Sodexo, Mixt Greens and True Food Kitchen.

The award is considered one of the most prestigious in the industry. This marks the 17th year for this award whose winners are selected by the editors of Nation's Restaurant News.

Winners are chosen for being "forward-thinking companies with emerging growth potential that appeal to consumers and position themselves at the leading edge of the foodservice industry."

At this year's Multi-Unit Foodservice Operators Conference at the Gaylord Texan in September, Boso will be honored for creating a place that serves what he calls, "good fast food delivered with lots of local flair and personality."

"It's been a goal of mine to be included for about seven years now," says Boso, proprietor/chef/bartender/busboy of Twisted Root.

Boso was surprised that his wish had actually come true. "I got a phone call from the person who recommended us and I peed my pants." As for what this honor means for Boso, well, he says, "An awards ceremony and the peace of mind that your peers recognize and agree that you are doing a good thing. It's like getting an A++ and a sticker from your favorite teacher."

So, will he create a new burger in honor of the honor? "No," he says, "It's really an industry insider award. I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and try everyday to do it better."

Such average burgers, though. And why can't they just ask for your real name instead of Kermit the Frog or whatever?

I miss the days when there was only a Deep Ellum Twisted Root.

And, they did the burgers rare if asked. Plus, getting a silly name didn't seem so hokey back then.
