Keller Farmer's Market Opens For Season

The term "Farmer's Market" covers a lot of things. Gone are the days in the late '50s of this country when it described a place and time farmers assembled to sell their wares. Today a hodgepodge of incense, hand-made tie-dye T-shirts, cheap hats, and as-seen-on-late-night-TV specials fill the stalls on weekends around the Dallas area.

Keller's Farmer's market, which soft-launched the season this weekend and will have its official grand opening on Saturday, May 7, luckily didn't flood us with insurance salesmen and holistic spinal alignment booths. Sadly, it didn't offer much of anything else, either.

Highlights among the 10 or so vendors were the Local Yocal Farm to Market stand, which sold pastured and local lamb, beef, chicken and pork, pasta and bread.

I didn't see much produce being offered, but this will hopefully change with the official opening on May 7, a volunteer told me. She also wanted me to mention that next week's farmer's market will be displaced by the Lions' Club annual spring fest and move across the
street.

If the market can manage to attract more food sellers while maintaining its commitment to only locally raised and grown products, Keller residents and nearby neighbors might be in for a treat this year. The market's size, however, makes it a slightly less attractive destination for anyone coming from further away.
