Upcoming Beer Events, With Varying Degrees of Relevance To St. Patrick's Day

Thank God we thought better of the notion of giving up beer for Lent. Not only would "grouchy and mean-spirited" be an understatement in describing what our attitude would be if faced with more than a month without a pint, but we'd miss some great events coming up -- not to mention the Meddlesome Moth's Ale Week April 4-10 (more on that to come as the week draws near). 

Two bars have set beer dinners for Monday night. The Common Table's Brooklyn Brewery Dinner, available 6:30 to 9 p.m., will feature five beers, including Black Ops Imperial Stout, Sorachi Ace Saison and Blast Imperial IPA, all paired with a four-course menu designed by new chef Mike Smith, formerly of 2900, TABC and the Green Room. Cost is $50 per person and includes complimentary glassware. E-mail Jeff Fryman to RSVP.

Beginning at 7 p.m. Monday is the Holy Grail's Irish-themed beer dinner, which offers proof that there's more to Irish cuisine than potatoes and cabbage. The full menu, plus info about Bavarian Grill's Bier 102 and The Common Table's Dogfish Head Day, is after the jump.

Irish cheese sampler
A tasting selection of 3 cheeses imported from Ireland. Paired with a beer flight of 3 coordinating brews.

Appetizer
Oysters with Guinness Sauce
Baked rock oysters with bacon cabbage and Guinness sabayon. Paired with Guinness Foreign Stout

Salad
Fried Goat Cheese Salad
Fresh garden greens with goat cheese fritters. Paired with Avery White Rascal.

Soup
Lamb and Mushroom
Seared lamb with vegetable ragout and wild mushroom broth.
Paired with Ommegang Abbey Ale

Entrée
Steak with Colcannon
Steak stuffed with Bushmills Whiskey sauce atop a traditional potato cabbage mix. Paired with Traquair Scottish Ale.

Dessert
Black and White Mousse
Guinness Black and White Chocolate mousse with Baily's whipped cream. Paired with Breckenridge Vanilla Porter.

Tuesday at 7 p.m., the Bavarian Grill continues its beer educational series with Bavarian Bier 102: Weizen und Wiener Schnitzel, featuring schnitzel dishes and four different wheat beers including "an insightful PowerPoint Presentation that covers the history and making of Bavarian Wheat Bier through virtual visits to different breweries." Registration is $25 per student.

Don't forget about St. Crafty's Day Thursday, March 17, at The Common Table. And finally, just as important, mark down another Common Table holiday on your calendar: Dogfish Head Day, starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26. A dozen Dogfish beers will be tapped at once, including "Randall the Enamel Animal" filled with fresh hops and 90 Minute IPA. The beers to be tapped: Raison d'Etre, 90 Minute, 60 Minute, 90 Minute through a Randall (dry hopping device), Indian Brown, Burton Baton, Chateau Jiahu, Aprihop, Midas Touch, Palo Santo Marron, Namaste (not confirmed yet) and Red & White.

Yeah, it would be awesome if they would distribute more of their one-off brews down here. Guess that's the disadvantage of being a couple thousand miles away. Hopefully one of the newer breweries popping up has some craftiness up their sleeve.

I've never tried a beer filtered through Randall, so that will be an interesting experience to say the least if I get over there.

Too bad we don't get any of the really off-centered DF beers down here...Namaste is the only one of those I have not tried and it's not even for sure.
