Matt's Rancho Martinez Is Not Closing

Categories: Food News
I'm not sure when Dallas's Only Daily started using the East Dallas Times as its go-to source for restaurant comings and goings. But, sweet fancy Moses, Bruce -- pick up the phone before you report that Matt's Rancho Martinez in Lakewood is closing.

Wasn't very hard to get Matt Martinez III on the phone just now. And he says he hasn't heard from anyone at The News. He also said the restaurant on La Vista has no plans to go anywhere for at least another year -- till February 27, 2012, which is when his lease runs out.

"So we have a whole 'nother year on our lease," Martinez tells City of Ate. "At that point, the landlord is entertaining all comers for the location. We put in our bid and told them to talk to us, but ultimately it'll be up to the landlord. At that point, soon as we hear one way or another, we'll figure out what to do. Now, we may move down the street if we have to, but we're not going anywhere. We have no plans to close."

How'd this story get started, then?

"I just heard something about [The News] blogging we'll be closed March 1," he says. "It's rampant, all the different rumors going around. So I don't know who let it out. From the beginning I've been dealing just with the landlord. I never told anyone what's going on, but someone's spilling beans one way or another. We don't want to go. We love the community, we love our customers, and we'll so what we can to stay here. It'll be a business deal, and if they choose to go with another tenant, we'll do what we need to do and relocate. But we hope that's not the case -- and it won't be for another year anyway."

And as Matt's prepares to close, it's days like this I miss Bruce Felps.  He'd get a chuckle looking back over the comments.

I know I'm really late commenting on this, but I hope they don't move.  The location in Garland off GB is not good.  I know it's the same ownership, but the food was so bad, I didn't finish and eventually through my leftovers away.  At the Dallas location, I usually leave stuffed and satisfied.  The landlord would be foolish to let an iconic restaurant like Matt's leave.  Hopefully they'll work something out.

I don't understand the love affair. The food is run-of-the-mill to horrible, as is the service. I miss El Chico. Eff the Bob Armstrong.

Bob Armstrong is obviously not the only dip in this post.

Sweet holy Moses, Robert. Our initial blog posting, attributed to the East Dallas Times, said the lease runs out in February 2012. Which, if I'm not mistaken, is correct.

In any case, Leslie Brenner has spoken with Matt III, and we've updated the posting with his comments.

Thanks for being a careful reader.

Food there is average, save for the Bob Armstrong. And I'll only eat there if there's a spot on the patio; the interior decor totally depresses me for some reason.

Mi Cocina will end up there - mark my words

Really, so not one but two items denying the veracity of an item by the DMN? That seems like a lot of energy over here on something that's not true. Surely there are other real news items to be reported.

Matt's started out off of Ferguson Rd in the mid-80's and has moved 3 times, with their faithful customers following them each time - as they will if another move is necessary. We sure miss Matt's smiles and stories, but Matt Jr is doing just fine carrying the family torch.

Tomaso used the same reporting techniques when he was covering the Trinity River project. Readin' them knuckle bones is all.

Sounds like Matt's as we know it is closing the Lakewood location, so I don't think the headline is that far off. But it's interesting you guys all got scooped by The East Dallas Times. Bet that doesn't feel too good ...

Did you actually read the East Dallas Times post? It did NOT report that Matt's was closing March 1st. Instead it discussed the lease ending in February 2012.

The landlord should remember the nightmares of Mangia and Boardwalk Beach Club before going the "all comers" route. East Dallas and Lakewood are very "word of mouth" and community oriented when supporting businesses...just ask Carrabba's Italian.

oh, that Bruce. never mind.

What does this say to you?

"East Dallas News is reporting that Matt's Rancho Martinez, the iconic Tex-Mex spot in Lakewood, will 'be no more' next year. Matt Martinez III, writes Bruce Felps, confirmed it."

Something about the words "will be no more next year". Doesn't say, "might be no more Lakewood location next year".....

I can't remember the name of the restaurant right off the top of my head that was on Ferguson, but I don't think it was Matt's Rancho Martinez. I remember the chef lost a lot of weight on his food.

ElephantJest got it right. It was Martin's that was on Ferguson. Good shit, too.
