Celebrity Barkeeps Michael Martensen and Eddie "Lucky" Campbell Plan Downtown Watering Hole

Categories: Food News

Dallas' thriving craft cocktail scene will soon have a downtown outpost, courtesy of local celebrity barkeeps Michael Martensen and Eddie "Lucky" Campbell.

The pair has begun renovations on the Main Street space previously occupied by Dr. Bell's BBQ in the 1400 block of Main Street. While the cocktail bar is geographically situated alongside City Tavern, its spiritual home

is between the popular beer joint and upscale bar at Charlie Palmer, located one block east. The as-yet-unnamed bar will cater to patrons who take their drinks seriously, but don't necessarily want to spend a day's pay on a night out. According to Martensen, food items will be priced at or below $12.

Martensen says he's currently developing an overarching concept and menu to match, and is toying with what to make of a historical tidbit he recently acquired: The location once housed a bar owned by Jack Ruby.

Ms. T, I was wondering the same thing and never got a response. I did notice one day that a sign was posted saying something to the effect of "RENT NOT PAID, TENANT LOCKED OUT" so who knows...

Celebrity barkeeps......isn't that like celebrity Walmart checker, or celebrity garbage man? REALLY? Slow news day. I call this yuppie drivel! The same people that think barkeeps are celebrities will pay $18.00 a plate for taco's with some fancy garnish.

This is awesome news! Between this place and Cedars Social, Martensen is going to really make a huge impression on the Dallas cocktail scene this first half of the year. Can't wait to see how they incorporate the Jack Ruby factoid.

Speaking of Dr. Bell's, what happened to it? I tried to ask the owner but he never responded to my email.

See the thing is that any person who hinges his business on a bartender, will surely see a "RENT NOT PAID, TENANT LOCKED OUT" sign. The subtle nuace is with regular POS staff and the kitchen, not the guy spinnin' bottles dealing with "Jimmi the drunk". Don't give them (bartenders) any credence, none; because they (and banquet waiters) will cut your throat when your not looking.......or steal all your frickin' profits.

Dude, like you have no life-right? Is that a satin smoking jacket? You are an indie hipster, aren't you?

krego have you ever worked in a restaurant before? If so I am sorry that you never had the pleasure of working with a professional staff. It is not just the bartender that keeps doors open or closed it is an entire unity of a staff that becomes a family. It is a shame that you have this opinion and you are the death of the cocktail the problem with the dining scene in Dallas. Get educated. I am with Justin B enjoy your sweet and sour margarita at Chili's.

Ah Krego, the mere fact that I expressed interest in this story in the first places proves that I do indeed have a life. If I didn't I'd be trolling around various local media blogs trying to pick fights with people who won't pay $18 for a plate of tacos but do know the difference between a yuppie and a hipster, and I don't mean just throwing them into comments to lend yourself credibility. I'm glad I won't be running into you here as you'll no doubt be sitting alone at some Chili's bar, trying to convince bystanders that you aren't as pathetic as eveyone knows you are.

Enjoy overpaying for food just to be seen as hip.

If you're lucky, they won't spit in it like I'm sure you and the other "professionals" did whenever someone you thought was beneath you suggested your service or food failed to meet their standards.

Dear Jack Rose, I read your reply to my post again, and man, it makes even less sense than when I read it last night. I thought it was just the bera, but nope, to no avail I am stunned by how little sense the post makes. With that being said, I am going to post that rambling mess on my fridge, so my kids know how "not" to post on blogs. Which Chili's do you work at?

Dear Jack Rose, I don't understand the post......are you high?

Wow, powerful stuff......did you moms help you make that up? Trolling? You are the one hanging out (or trolling) in bars with a satin smoking jacket, acting like you are in Havana 1958, you flaccid dong. Here's an idea.....go take a walk, go hiking, rent a kayak. You know, it's not ALWAYS about impressing your friends! And finally, I will always fight the good fight; the battle against grimy hipsters, soulless yuppies and the mindless crudheads that are trying to drive this country into the ground. I do it so my kids won't think it's "cool" to be a 28 year old lonely hipster trying to impress his friends with banal banter of CELEBRITY bartenders. And you are calling me pathetic?
