Cheap Margaritas Make It A Very Happy Hour At Tejano
Where: Tejano Mexican Restaurant, 110 W. Davis St., 214-943-8610
When: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday
What: $1.25 margaritas (regularly $2), $3.50 piña coladas (regularly $6.25), $3 Coors Light or Bud Light (regularly $3.59), $3.49 Dos Equis (regularly $4.79)
Why or why not: North Oak Cliff has become a hip, trendy dining destination thanks to an influx of new restaurants offering interesting new creations using seasonal, artisan, locally produced ingredients. This is not one of those restaurants. Tejano offers old-school throwback Tex-Mex where the cheese is orange, the beans are brown and the chips are greasy enough to fuel a biodiesel truck halfway to Austin.
Daily lunch specials start at $4.99 and are filling enough that you're ready to take a nap by the time you're through, even without the booze. Add a margarita and you'd better not have any serious work to do the rest of the afternoon. As for those 'ritas, they're not the strongest in Dallas, and they're not exactly made from organic Texas limes, Patrón and Grand Marinier. But they're not the worst we've had, either--on the sweet side, yes, and almost certainly made from a powdered mix, but they're not syrupy and have enough tequila that you can taste it. Anyway, for $1.25 each, who's complaining?
The atmosphere is friendly and lively at this longtime staple of the Wynnewood neighborhood a few blocks east of the Bishop Arts District. The lunch crowd ranges from retired couples to Dallas Zoo employees, while families pack the dining room for dinner.
