Dallas Interfaith Holds the Mother of All Church Potlucks
According to Dallas Area Interfaith's website, the nonprofit's lobbied for more police officers, organized immigration reform marches and helped house evacuees from Hurricane Katrina. But the network of more than 60 faith institutions -- many of which hold regular socials and suppers -- has never put together a food event.
The group's fundraiser tonight marks the first time DAI member churches and synagogues will share their culinary specialties. Lead organizer Willie Bennett says the Katrina Survivors Network proposed the idea. The event is from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Heard-Craig Hall at 306 North Church St.
"You know New Orleans is known for its good food," Bennett says.
"One Spirit, Many Flavors" will feature a silent auction and samples of food prepared by 15 institutions: King of Glory Lutheran Church is serving venison sausage, San Juan Diego Church is making taquitos de barbacoa, Temple Emanu-El's cooking up noodle kugel and the Katrina Survivors Network is providing the red beans and rice. The First Unitarian Church is contributing cheese and crackers.
"It's lots of good stuff," Bennett says.
The event in McKinney is free, although Bennett's hoping the lasagna, taco soup and bagels will inspire attendees to support DAI's work.
"Bring a checkbook," he says.
