Military Appreciation Cook-Off Needs More Participants, Natsumi Kitchen Opens at Farmers Market, Wine and Cheese Pairing Class, and More

Just because summer is over doesn't mean barbecues and cookouts are no more until next summer. We mean, come on, this is Texas, any time is barbecue time.

On October 2, The Dave Kenoly Show on CNN Radio 1190 AM, will be host its First Annual Military Appreciation Cook-Off to -- obviously -- show appreciation to active duty military members and their families. The event will be held at the Holiday Inn DFW Centreport in Fort Worth, and will kick off around 11 a.m.

Why are we telling you a month in advance? We wanted to give our barbecue enthusiasts enough time to sign up and participate in the event. The cook-off will have five categories: barbecue (ribs, brisket, and sauce), chili, baked good, side dish and salsa. Oh, and there will cash prizes for the top three winners in each category.

Natsumi Gelato + Frozen Yougurt just opened up a sister location, Natsumi Kitchen, at the Dallas Farmers Market in Shed 2. It's been celebrating the grand opening all weekend, and today, September 7, is the last day you will be able to stop by and receive a free small cup of gelato with any food purchase. Another place celebrating a grand opening this week will be the Southern-inspired restaurant Buttons in Addison this Saturday, September 11. Mozzarella Company is hosting two different classes this week for cheese lovers. First, it will have a wine and cheese pairing class on Wednesday, September 8, for $50 per person. Guests will get a behind-the-scenes tour of the cheese factory and then pair up to eight cheeses with wines with Paula Lambert, the Mozzarella Company founder, and wine expert John Bratcher. On Saturday, September 11, the cheese maker will host a hands-on cheese-making class for $75 per person. Students will learn how to make a variety of mozzarella like bocconcini, rolls and Queso Oaxaca along with fresh ricotta cheese; the event will also include a wine and cheese pairing.
