As a countdown to the Dallas Observer's "Best of Dallas" 2010, City of Ate is serving up 100 of the favorite dishes we crave, savor and hope to scarf down again soon. These dishes are in no particular order. Some are little known, others celebrated. Some are pricey, others can be eaten on the cheap, but all are delicious to the extreme. Don't hesitate to share your own nominations in the comments. More of the dish's tasty details are after the jump.

No. 77 Shrimp and Grits at Screen Door

Located in the One Arts Plaza in the downtown Arts District, Screen Door sits nestled among some very affable company-- heavy hitters such as Tei An and Dali Wine Bar to name a few. But the restaurant holds its own on the southern hospitality scale, and among the southern cooking that drives its cuisine is our favorite dish: Shrimp and Grits. We have it on good authority that the owners of Screen Door sought out a unique purveyor for the grits and had them milled by artisans, making their mouth-feel extra comforting with mammoth bursts of flavor. The surrounding shrimp are meaty with a slight and giving sea flavor that is sweet and smoky. A spicy Creole sauce perks the palate in a small way that lends freshness to the aftertaste. The dish will have you wishing Dallas was more firmly rooted in its southern than its southwestern culture.
