City of Ate's 100 Favorite Dishes: #93 Elotes at Fuel City

As a countdown to the Dallas Observer's "Best of Dallas" 2010, City of Ate is serving up 100 of the favorite dishes we crave, savor and hope to scarf down again soon. These dishes are in no particular order. Some are little known, others celebrated. Some are pricey, others can be eaten on the cheap, but all are delicious to the extreme. Elotes is not for the faint of condiment heart, seeing as how the cup of corn (that's what us white folk call the Mexican magic that is elotes) comes squirted 'n slathered with tubed butter, sour cream and salsa, plus a healthy dumping of grated quesa fresca. At Fuel City, Dallas' finest gas station-ranch-swimming hole, elotes comes packaged in a crisp white Styrofoam cup and topped with the option of a plastic lid. Dallas isn't typically the kind of place where street food is smiled upon (in Texas, Austin wins for trailer snacks, no contest) but the cart of corn parked outside Fuel City throughout the year provides a nice break for Dallasites exhausted by the burdens of eating out of things that aren't particularly likely to give people or the environment cancer (ya know, like plates and bowls). The perfect complement to Fuel City's stomach-sexing tacos (two picadillos and a pastor, please), a cup of corn sets hungry (and hungover) patrons back only $2.50, provided they've got the cash -- because you can't charge elotes...with anything other than being delicious!
