Appetite For Instruction: Hot Toddies

Recipe Demonstrated by Nicole Gragg

Most of the people around me are coughing, everything I touch is freezing, animal lovers are dressing their dogs in holiday sweaters....this is when I knew that winter had finally arrived.

There are only two things that can make arctic temperatures bearable: a hot drink and a fireplace.

I recruited my friend (and former bartender) to show me one of her winter go-to drinks, a hot toddy. It had the word "hot" in the title, so immediately I was sold. A hot toddy is believed to cure the common cold or flu, though in my case I just wanted a cure for coldness creeping into my bones and slowly taking over my body.

Nicole says there are variations on how to make a hot toddy. You could use either brandy, whiskey or rum for your poison of choice. You could also make the specialty drink with hot water or throw in a herbal tea bag for more flavor. And when it comes to garnishing the drink, the options are endless.

I decided to leave it up the professional on how she wanted to concoct the drink, and she decided it was best to go with brandy--it's OK to use a less expensive one--and hot tea. Today we show you how to stay warm, help cure a cold and well, alcohol is involved, so maybe have a little fun.

Ingredients:
2 oz. brandy
1 TBSP honey
1 lemon
1 cup of boiling water
1 tea bag

Step 1: While boiling one cup of hot water and adding a tea bag, coat the bottom of a mug or glass with honey.

Step 2: Add a shot of brandy (to taste, of course) and a few squeezes from a fresh lemon to the glass.

Step 3: Pour steaming tea into the glass and stir thoroughly until honey is dissolved. Garnish with a lemon and drink away.
