We suggest contestants find out who the judges are before attempting a Nyotaimori presentation.

​The ever-charitable RA Sushi in Plano will hold its first "Roll'N With RA" charity sushi contest 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday. Six non-profit organizations--Hunger Busters, the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure, The Alzheimer's Association, The American Cancer Society, The Genesis Women's Shelter and The North Texas Food Bank--will create sushi rolls for the competition. Media judges are to score each entry on creativity, taste and presentation.

The winning entry, which will be announced that evening, will be added to the RA menu August 14 through September 4 with a portion of proceeds going to the winning organization.

And if any of the entries use creamed corn or beets, you'll know which charity was the beneficiary of our Spring pantry cleaning annual food-drive contribution a few months back.

After finishing the fermentation of its first batch of 100-percent Texan wine, Calais Winery will be taking a week off, closing today through Sunday.

Brooklyn Jazz Cafe presents Concrete Rose featuring Prudence the Isis from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. The spoken-word event is held every First Tuesday in the restaurant's courtyard. It's free, but entails a two-drink minimum. That won't set you back much at all, though, considering the dirt-cheap drink specials like $1.75 domestics and $2 wells. You may even have some cash left over for selected half-price apps.

Garland 14-year-old Caleb Garcia is one of three finalists in the National Mango Board's Rising Mango Star recipe challenge. His Mango Stir-Fry recipe and demonstration video earned him a trip to Hollywood, where he'll compete in the finale on Friday. Look out, Melissa D'Arabian!
