Dog Days Of Summer

Nothin' says summer like a hot dog.

Okay, burgers and ice cream do a pretty good job of getting the point across. Cold beer, too. But you gotta admit, hot dogs hold a special place in our hearts.

Why? Because no matter how you dress 'em up, they're always more PBR than Pinot Noir (kinda like us that way). You'll find no haute dogs on this list, no overpriced cheese-and-lobster renditions--just great Dallas dogs, perfect for the longest, hottest days of the year.

The Angry Dog: Halt a hangover in its tracks with an original Angry Dog, Voted Dallas' Best Hot Dog by the Observer in 1994, 2001 and 2002. The all-beef kosher dog is loaded with mustard, chili, grilled onions and cheddar cheese and it comes with fries for just $5.95.

Wild About Harry's: Harry Coley's dog-and-custard show has been making folks smile since 1996. His "award-winning" hot dogs come with topping combos for everyone, from classic New York and Chicago styles to the Knox Street dog with 1,000 Island Dressing, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese. Prices range from $3.99-$5.49.

Frankie's Sports Bar: This quintessential neighborhood beer and flat screen venue (now in Uptown and Lewisville) offers four types of all-beef "red hots" styled after ball parks across the nation. For purists, there's the Yankee Stadium with mustard, 'kraut and onion. Iron stomachs can go for the Chase Field "Perro Caliente" with bacon, jalapeños and queso in a corn tortilla. All come with mesquite chips for $5.95 or $6.95.

Dairy-ette: Get your dog with a side of nifty 50's nostalgia at this East Dallas drive-in. Hot dogs here come plain for just $1.70 or with chili and cheese for a dollar more. We also have it on good authority that the fries are not to be missed. Of course, people say that about mediocre fries all the time, so...

Hunky's: Visit Hunky's on Cedar Springs or in the Bishop Arts District for a quarter-pound dog with mustard, relish and onions for just $3. With chili and cheese they're $4.15 and--wait for it--you can get tater tots and Blue Bell shakes there, too.

Ah, summer.
