Spam-ming The City; Maximo Effort

Don't call it McSushi, but finding a reasonably priced roll in the DFW area is about to get really, really easy.

A restaurant with the convenience of fast food and low price points of grocery store sushi, Wylie-born Avocado California Roll & Sushi is already rolling for our neighbors in Denton, Irving and Frisco. And, it's coming our way this weekend. Avocado serves Asian staples like miso soup, udon noodles and edamame in addition to a wide selection of rolls.

Like its siblings, the new location on Central Expressway at Meadow will lean heavily on "Americanized" rolls without raw fish--such as California rolls and tempura rolls--but will feature a few raw selections, as well as an...um...startling Hawaiian favorite. Yes, a Spam roll.

The best way to try it out? take advantage of the lunch special: Purchase any roll over $3.99, and get free miso soup, salad, edamame and two pieces of gyoza.

Also opening this week is Maximo Mexicana Cocina & Margarita Lounge. Maximo's grand opening is at 6:30 p.m., January 24 with live entertainment and special drink and menu items, like ahi tuna Mexi-wraps, oven roasted beef tenderloin and a sweets table. Every bit of the $100 ($175 for two) per ticket proceeds benefit the Dallas Children's Advocacy Center, which helps abused children. Call 214-818-2641 to RSVP.
