Hash Over: Brothers To Expand, Brother's Shuts Down And Other Tidbits

Word on the street has restaurateur brothers Gabriel and Adrian DeLeon planning something new. Already the two run Irving’s longstanding La Margarita, a destination not just for its tequila selection. Their new venture—Masaryk—is slated for Addison Circle.

No, the brothers did not name Masaryk for the founder and first president of the late Czechoslovakia, so no svickova or smazeny syr for the northern suburbs. Nope, the Masaryk in question is a bustling, relatively kidnap-free avenue in Mexico City. Their new restaurant, therefore, will feature “modern Mexican” cooking with a (hopefully) vast tequila lounge attached.

We hear of a February opening, which translates as sometime in the spring of 2009.

***

Oh, Brother’s—rumors began circulating yesterday about the sudden demise of Brother’s Fried Chicken on Gaston, confirmed here by Pegasus News.

***

Stories began popping up late last week regarding Mico Rodriguez, driving force behind Mi Cocina and M Crowd restaurants. This from the Dallas Morning News is the most comprehensive blurb so far (with an additional tidbit about Mike Modano and Brett Hull’s foray into the food service business, supported by Andrea Alcorn’s PR machine).

Don’t know if “booting”—that’s how I heard it—Mico will hurt the popular Tex-Mex chain. There’s only so much you can jack up the price of weak Margaritas, after all, and restaurateurs are a disposable commodity.

***

Let’s see…I’ve been back in Dallas for just over a month and already Pyramid Restaurant in the Fairmont completed a redesign and, just today, announced the appointment of a new sommelier.

Press materials tout the FNG’s experience: Ritz Carlton, The Mansion, certified whatever—oh, and judge for the Grapevine International Wine Competition.

***

Marc DePetris, described as a “chef-entrepreneur” opened Marc Events, a catering location in the Design District with seating for up to 350 (and cocktail space for almost double that amount, depending on how many people consume). Guess we’re approach office party season—assuming offices other than AIG can still afford to throw parties.

Anyway, you gotta love it when a place labels the Design District a “hot spot for events” then assures us their parking lot “is well-lighted for security.”

***

Other tidbits: The Mansion’s terrace, billed as a spot for fireside cocktails as well as sit down dining (even in jeans) opens tonight . . . Capital Grille supports Share Our Strength and the fight to end childhood hunger in America with $1,000 martinis. Profits from the whopping bill go to charity and well-heeled alcoholics walk—stumble if they’re extraordinarily well-heeled—away with a white topaz and diamond rope bracelet designed by Steven Lagos, a little “thank you for giving” trinket attached to each cocktail glass…Feast of Sharing expects to serve up an early Thanksgiving to perhaps 10,000 folks, free of charge, on Thursday (November 13) from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Fair Park’s Centennial Building. The celebration is a centerpiece in Central Market’s efforts to bring attention to and overcome the problem of hunger in the community.
